Captain Freeshit: See Whip It! Tonight!

whip_skateSomewhere, Bikini Kill is weeping; or maybe not. Because who could have ever predicted that the Riot Grrl movement’s opening cry for “GIRL POWER” in the early 1990s would result in, among other things, a national roller derby scene and, mon dieu, the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore? In any case, I think we could all agree that it’s better than the Spice Girls. And so we turn our attentions to Whip It, starring Ellen Page (Juno) as a beauty queen who says “F all that noise, I’m going out for the roller derby team!” As you no doubt know, this roller derby shit is real: Here in Philly, for instance, this Saturday night, the Philly Roller Girls host their last home season bout of the year in Philadelphia. (Related: The WFTDA National Championships: Declaration Of Derby will be hosted by the Philly Roller Girls at the PA Convention Center, November 13-15th, 2009.) But that’s all down the road apiece; tonight, we have tickets to see an advance screening of Whip It, and we wanna hook you up. So far as we know, rollerblades are not allowed in the theater. But the revolution’s not over yet.
