Good News: Park(ing) Day Edition

ParkingDayThis is possibly the most adorable idea we’ve heard recently: this Saturday, September 19th, is Park(ing) Day, when random parking spots across the city will be turned into 9 by 20 ft. parks for one day only. An annual global event, Park(ing) Day has been spreading the cause of fun, light-hearted social activism for the last four years. Philadelphia has always been known as the City of Neighborhoods, and for lots of people here, the stoop serves as their own miniature park 365 days a year, but the idea of being creative with space in this way, getting outside and talking to neighbors, well … thats all kinds of good stuff we can get behind. Shockingly enough, the PPA is actually into the idea too, which is weird, but we feel like this kind of infectious good vibe is exactly what we’ve been craving lately. The website has all sorts of handy manuals and tips for creating your own park, as well as a map with all the participating locales around the world. If you spot any great parks tomorrow, send us a picture at tips[at]philebrity[dot]com.

It’s this Friday, September 18th NOT Saturday the 19th.

Of course the PPA is into the idea. They have long strived to limit the amount of parking in the city in order to write more tickets. Fewer legal spaces to park means more cars parked illegally, which generates more cash for the bastard PPA. I wouldn’t be surprised if the PPA decided to permanently turn parking spaces into little parks and then ticket people who linger there too long.
