This Weekend: Zzzaugust
FRIDAY:
>>> Oh gosh, look at this forecast. And look at that calendar. Nothing doing. This is going to be a fantastic weekend to… sleep. But if you must rage against the dying of the light, there definitely is some stuff to do, at least. Go check in with dance troupe Club Lyfestyle at PIFAS, where they will reprise all the crazy dances they scared America with this summer. Or, there’s also some serious soul thunder in the guise of Turnaround Vs. Immediate at the Barbary, which is always solid.
>>> Elsewhere: We like the strange, herky-jerky art rock of an An American Chinese, who are at Johnny Brenda’s; we also like Oh! Pears, who are doing something similar but perhaps more studied, at Tritone; if none of that sounds right to you, dig Misstallica — the all-female Metallica cover band — at North Star Bar.
SATURDAY:
>>> The Flaming Lips at Festival Pier: While it’s true that the Lips’ live show has not changed in any real way in about five years, in this case, that’s a good thing, because everyone needs to see Wayne Coyne walk over them in a Space Bubble at least once and confetti canons blast as the band plays “Do You Realize?” at least once. In fact, some people need it a lot of times. Whatever it takes to get clear.
>>> Public Record, for our money, are consistently one of the most interesting bands in Philly; we only wish they’d play out more. On the other hand, there’s something to be said for just letting other people do it for you. The band’s latest release, Echolocation, features remixes by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi), Quentin Stoltzfus (Mazarin), Alasdair MacLean (The Clientele) & Malcolm Ross (Josef K, Orange Juice), Mac McCaughan (Superchunk), Mark Robinson (Unrest) and Jeff Zeigler (Arc In Round). They’re having a listening party for it on Saturday outdoors at 5PM at that awesome little outdoor venue/space on Frankford Avenue called The Caterpillar.
SUNDAY:
>>> Long strands of nothingness, punctuated by the sound of turning pages.
