Goon Squad Update/Wingnut’s Delight: Totally Unnecessary Obama Background Check Produces Yet Another Proud Moment For Philly P.D.

policeacAt the risk of repeating ourselves: What’s it gonna take to have the Goon Squad mentality rampant in the Philly Police Department examined in any meaningful way? And at what point does the disconnect between Philly cops who have brains and Philly cops who have none get addressed and the quality of discourse over policing the city rises? Believe it or not, we might have found two of those points. Take, for example, the flap surrounding the cop in the 18th District (West Philly) who ran a background check on some guy named Barack Obama, which feds instantly knew about, and for which Officer Friendly was roundly disciplined. “This was beyond dumb and he will be disciplined,” said Philadelphia Police Sergeant Ray Evers. Thank you, sir. Now, at this point, you might expect us to go find the Domelights thread where Philly cops really let us know how they feel about our Kenyan Socialist Hitler President. But guess what? There is none. And to be honest, we’re not 100% sure that’s a good thing. We’re not 100% sure about anything with Philly cops these days. And that is something that’s gonna have to get addressed, sooner rather than later.

I thought the same thing myself, but when it came out that he ran this check at 7:45 AM, I figured the guy was just bored and had 15 minutes left on his shift. That computer is like Facebook for police.
