Musical Rumblings: Go Forward, Move Ahead

>>> In case you missed our post last week on late summer/early fall local releases that we’re digging, know this: There’s plenty more where that came from. Take, for instance, The Sky Drops, a ridiculously slept-on shoegaze band hailing from the great state of Delaware. Though they’ve been around for a few years (Skydrop Rob Montejo played in Smashing Orange), their debut full-length, Bourgeois Beat, comes out tomorrow. And we could see bigger things for them. Between the shoegaze genre itself enjoying something of a revival and the Drops’ knack for penning great tunes — Bourgeois Beat contains “Hang On,” which has been on heavy rotation in this office for, oh, about a year now, as well as “Truth Is,” seen at right — something pretty (and pretty real) is going on here. Download the track “Swimming With Fishes” off Bourgeois Beat here. [SkyDrops/YouTube]
>>> This is way, way, ahead, but avant-neo-classical heads should mark March 6, 2010 on their calendars. That’s the day when The Philadelphia Singers debut three premieres by Americans Philip Glass and Steve Reich, and British composer Gavin Bryars at Zellerbach Theatre. For these pieces, the Phila. Singers are joining forces with new music ensembles Relâche and Orchestra 2001. The concert features the world premiere of Glass’s Persephone and Philadelphia premieres of Reich’s You Are (Variations) and Laude 23 and 24 from Bryars’ Lauda Cortonese. For people who follow this, it’s sort of a big deal. [PhiladelphiaSingers]
>>> And finally, switching back to longhairs with guitars, Kurt Vile‘s debut Matador Records release will be celebrated on October 3rd at Kung Fu Necktie. It will sell out faster than you can imagine. Pity it’s not at 30th Street Station. [Philebrity KV Archive]

    Smashing Orange.

That’s a name we haven’t heard in about 17 years or so. And around that time, ajackal Billy C. from Chicago kinda-sorta-but-not-really hijacked their name and went onto world acclaim (and embarrassment).

Once upon a time, we saw the future of music being lead by the likes of Smashing Orange’s “My Deranged Heart”, Fudge’s “Girl Wish” and Velocity Girl when Bridget Cross was the vocalist.

    Simpler times, indeed.

Remember seeing Smashing Orange play in the early 90′s, and Rob still looks exactly the same as he did then. He must have a painting in his attic somewhere.

…and I think you guys are overdue for a Swirlies appreciation post.
