Remember that “Bonsai Kitten” meme from earlier in the decade? The hoaxy website that provided detailed instructions on how to “grow” a cat inside a container, much like the ancient Japanese art of growing tiny, strangely-shaped trees? Unfortunately, an elderly Germantown woman appears to have remembered the website but wasn’t in on the joke; she seems to have acted upon her memories by attempting some kitty bonsai herself, keeping kittens inside a sealed plastic container. Luckily, the SPCA stepped in and rescued the trapped kitties (along with some ill-kept dogs) from their fate of either bonsai or (more likely) suffocation. There’s a lesson we can all learn from this: Today’s internet sensation can become tomorrow’s tragedy. Could you imagine what would happen if suddenly, Susan Boyle couldn’t handle her fame and had a mental breakdown? Oh. Ohhhh. Umm…well, what if a wacky wedding video brought renewed fame to a singer who committed violence against his girlfriend? Oh dear… this is easier than we thought. The rescued Germantown kitties: The latest in a long line of Internet memes gone terribly awry.
