Three Cheers For The Frog Whisperer
Thanks to NBC 10’s reporting, we just learned that we have a new hero: Jamie Robinson, a Penn Valley man who has dubbed himself the “frog whisperer.” After a house in his neighborhood was purchased, the new owners created an almost impenetrable seal over the backyard swimming pool with a plastic tarp, two-by-fours, and wire, trapping a large quantity of frogs inside and depriving them of food and air. Fortunately, Robinson was able to penetrate the seal. He rescued most of the frogs and took them to relative safety of Mill Creek, much like a modern-day Robin Hood. Jamie Robinson, we salute you: In this era of unprecedented wildlife deaths, you stand as a beacon of inspiration, helping to turn the tide in the animals’ favor. Now how are your skills with raccoons?

Let’s hope they were native species like green frog or carpenter frog. My fear is that these might be bull frogs, which are deemed an invasive species in some parts of this region: they’re known to eat native frogs, some of which are endangered. Releasing a large number of them into the wild might have some unintended consequences. That said, the frogs shouldn’t be left to die like that. Either way the fellow deserves a pat on the back for such a decent impulse, and for showing his young ‘uns that one should act on them.
Now if I can get some samaritans to help me save bog orchids by dismantling some of these beaver dams on state land.
