This Weekend: Can You Surrey? Can You Picnic?
FRIDAY:
>>> Folks, we are really down in it now: That lonely mini-epoch of deepest summer. Nothing coming in, nothing going out. Perhaps it was Yo La Tengo (see video above) who articulated the feeling the best: “on darkened streets tonight/i make a wrong turn right/take in the lonely sight/and the summer comes undone.” Then again, YLT were also pretty fond of this time of year, as evidenced in “Center of Gravity.” And if you think pondering the YLT Summer Canon is a waste of space in Weekend Picks, well then, I trust you didn’t just spend the last hour digging around for interesting things to send you people to. There aren’t many, so we can do this quick and then get outta here so we can all get to the very pressing matter of Doing Nothing. You’ve got your standbys: Robotique at Kung Fu Necktie (those old disco edits were made for sweaty little bars on airless nights like these) and Madonna Michael Prince at The Barbary, in case you get stuck with friends visiting town and you have to prove to them that, no, seriously, fun things happen in Philadelphia all the time. See? And if you were ever wondering where all the music on The Hills and Gray’s Anatomy comes from (and whether actual people are fans of the bands who make it), check out Greg Laswell and Elizabeth & The Catapult at The M Room. But you’re not doing any of that, are you? In that case, Thursday night’s picks still apply. Now more than ever.
SATURDAY:
>>> As you may have picked up on earlier today, we’re saving ourselves up for the Gemini Wolf CD release show at Johnny Brenda’s, with Pink Skull and the West Philadelphia Orchestra.
>>> And Click is back at The Barbary. You should see how hard we tried to come up with fun things for you people to do. But the world didn’t want it that way. Maybe you should fill your hippie pouch with some of these and just roam the countryside all weekend, silently chewing on leaf after leaf, as the anti-breeze whispers your name. And then…
SUNDAY:
Red, yellow, honey, sassafrass and moonshine. See you on Monday, world.
