Matador Leaks MP3 From New Kurt Vile LP; Philebrity Tentatively Signs On For “Kurt Villadelphia” Week In Rocktober
Our love for Philly singer-songwriter/vibe sherpa Kurt Vile is, at this point, no secret. And with the news of Vile’s recent signing to Matador Records and a new record due in October, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the inevitable pre-release mp3 links. And today, the Matablog did just that, releasing cover art and a track from Vile’s Childish Prodigy, which will be out on October 6. The track is called “Overnite Religion,” and it goes a little something like this:
Kurt’s next local gig, btw, is on the 23rd at Johnny Brenda’s with Tyvek and Coconut Coolouts. (Superfans might also wanna check out his recent WKDU DJ set.)
But wait, there’s more: During the week of the record’s release, Philebrity and Matador are knocking around the idea for something called “Kurt Villadelphia Week” in which we’d be previewing the record and — it’s just a theoretical right now — lining up an entire week’s worth of Kurt Vile shows, some scheduled, some in “surprise” locations. KV fans, this is where you come in: We need your help. What Philly locale would it blow your everloving mind to see KV, Philly’s Constant Hitmaker, play a show in? We’ve already got some ideas in the hopper, but we know you’ve probably got better ones. So tell us in the comments!

The old waiting room at 30th Street Station, where parts of Blow Out were filmed and where you can now have private parties. It is the room with the huge bas relief on the wall.

I second the 30th St waiting room, easily my favorite spot in the city. Another option would be in front of the Dream Garden (possibly what rejontail is suggesting by Magic Garden?)mosaic in the Curtis Center. Or in the plaza in the middle of City Hall.

@expat: I sense a “Blow Out,” “Sixth Sense,” and “12 Monkeys” theme. M. Night could shoot a video and the twist will be Kurt taking off a mask to reveal he is actually Scott Stapp of Creed. Disappointed, Kurt’s fans tear apart the imposter’s body and dump the remains in the Love fountain. Fountain water turns red, star wipe, fade to black.

the Spectrum! Or maybe at least the First Unitarian Church.

Ok weird. Right after I watched the Pavement 90’s sidewalk video, I was thinking to myself, that’s what’s wrong with music today. No one just PLAYS anymore. Once an artist goes viral or platinum, they become a slave to the Clearchannel of it all and forget the reason they started playing. Not the girls or the drugs or the money, for the music. PLAY THE MUSIC. Surprise and delight someone. Just stand somewhere and play, man. Damn the Man. Save the Empire. My thoughts: the corner open terrace on 1001 N. 2nd, which overlooks 2nd st/Bar ferdinand/El camino. An empty storefront on 3rd. Fitler’s Square Park. The Courtyard of City Hall. A flatbed truck moving slowly down Market Street. On the carousel in Franklin Square. At the Rodin Statue. In that little park across from the Basilica. On the front steps of The Franklin Institute. On the baseball field across from Pat’s and Geno’s.

In the Navy Yard, on the steps of one of those giganctic old buildings (dorms, schools, factories? I could never tell what they originally were for.)

The empty field at 20th and Market, which has turned into a pretty wildflower garden now that development is on hold.

I second the Magic Garden – @expat: it’s the Isaiah Zagar creation on South St.

Ahhh, yes. Getting my philly gardens mixed around.

All decent ideas. And Kurt proved opening for Sonic Youth that he can rock big spaces just as well as teensy rooms like Kungfu Necktie. So how about here:

It’d be the best non-R5-affiliated church show ever.

How ’bout in his sister’s backyard… or better yet our father’s backyard… daddy has chickens now, Kurt! Who the heck has chickens in Delaware County. Only dad! Maybe you can do “cluck ol hen” on your banjo.
Cool article, baby brother! Bye.

Impromptu jams in the Gallery down by the escalators to the trains? The reverb alone would be worth it.

or the planetarium. The adam arcuagi/espers show there was amazing.

I second Fels planetarium. Saw Dr. Dog/Make a Rising there. Nothing would suit KV’s space blues so much as actually floating through space, or a drug-induced/video simulation thereof.

I’d like to see a show on a rooftop. Not sure where to recommend though.
I second the planetarium and jerk hut locations. The train station idea is good too, considering the cover off his one record.

The Holy Trinity Romanian Church on Bodine Street in No. Libs; it’s insanely beautiful, 1700s, with plasterwork from the same guy who did the interior of Independence Hall, and weird orthodox folk art murals from the 1930s, when it became a Romanian congregation. plenty of seats and a wrap around balcony. Plus Father Buga said he would be cool with some music if it would bring some attention to the church to help with repairs.
