Readers Cameraphone: University City Flag Wars Now Claiming Actual Flag Victims

People, people: How many innocent, seemingly well-intentioned promotional flags, designed by someone somewhere whom you know was very proud of the graphic design skills he or she thought the flags displayed, have to die before we all learn that war is hell? Will it be three? Will it be eight? When will it be enough? When, we ask both trustafarians and people with degrees in Urban Studies, when?

Lets just hope those valiant “anarchists” don’t run out of money and have to move back to their mom’s house in the lily-white burbs before they get to stage more heroic attempts to stop “the man”. And by “the man” I mean the UCD and their evil scheme to promote 2nd generation African-American owned business like the White Seal Cleaners on the 4900 block. I mean any promotion of any business whose clientel is not exactly as pierced as I am is obviously “gentrification” – completely unlike any of business that serves exclusively white people, middle class young people equally as crunchy and crusty as I am.

BTW – FWIW I think the graphic work on those banners might have actually been done by Mark Christman of Ars Nova fame – you know the guy responsible for booking every freaked out late-70′s post-Sun Ra free jazz skronker that ever plays in this town. those UCD types are total stuffed shirts.

i saw the missing flags this weekend and i thought it was so sad, such misplaced energy…next time i toss a penny in the fountain i’ll wish that these douches were interested in helping find solutions for health care, benefits for home care workers, adult literacy…dare i say it? interested in finding actual solutions for real problems that affect real people. ripping up other people’s shit is juvenile, but also serves absolutely no purpose. UCD can replace ‘em in a wink if they want to.

Seriously, have you ever noticed that in reality places like A-space, Mariposa Co-op, etc. serve a clientel that is significantly more lily white than the places the anti-gentrification folks complain about like Dock St. or Gold Standard – like 20% or more of the folks who go to those “gentrified” places are black folks from the neighborhood but that its more like a big fat 0% at the A-space, etc?

Coincidentally, this light standard is directly across the street from A-Space.
