Update: James Brooks Film Still Nameless, Probably About Baseball

BoysBaseballAs you may already know, James L. Brooks is filming his new, still untitled, picture right here in southeast Pennsylvania. It’s good to see, in this uncooperative economy, that someone is taking advantage of the (endangered) PA film tax credit as the film is estimated to bring $60 million and some 1,200 jobs to the Philadelphia area. When we first caught wind of this movie we were all excited to maybe, possibly have Bill Murray playing the role of Paul Rudd‘s father, but that all fell through. And who did Brooks find to replace him? None other than Jack Nicholson, so as far as damage control goes, consider that damage controlled. Details about the movie are scarce, but our crack team of interns have scoured the seriestuben high and low, and it’s starting to look like this new Brooks project is going to be another baseball flick. Supporting cast titles include relief pitcher #1, outfielder, college softball player #3, and baseball fan. Hmmm… a baseball movie set in Philadelphia, home of world champ Phillies- our immediate question was: Will any of our Phillies be making cameo appearances? Meanwhile, Drexel University‘s not-so-beautiful campus will be a primary shooting location. Hopefully, this new baseball movie will help immortalize the Phillies just as Angels In The Outfield did for the now-immortal California Angels. Sure, we could have thought up a better comparison, but we figured you all could sort that out amongst yourselves in the comments.

This week they are filming at my office building so I am hosing them down (paparazzi term). Just missing an Owen & Reese shot, but I guess I’ll have to get them on the Drexel field or at Parc.

    Seriestuben. I like that.

maybe it’s a multinational film about baseball. according to michael klein, “They’re looking for “foreign diplomats”: men and women, all ethnicities, ages 35-60, who own their own national dress (i.e. saris, kufi caps, kaffiyehs, thawbs, turbans, etc.) SAG and non-union actors will be considered.”

The film is about the Nationals, yes the same Nationals who suck ungodly god balls.

    Enjoy.

I lived in Cleveland for 5 years and there was one Hollywood movie shot there, and the film took place in Cleveland. Now we have tons of films shooting in Philly and they all take place somewhere else.

@barryg: we need a remake of Mannequin! (Though that would probably end up being shot in Baltimore, the way these things go).

  7. Patricio Says:

Most films that are shot here do take place in Philadelphia.

While the film is about the Nats (second to worst nickname for a MLB team) the movie also filmed a bit in DC as well. I was reading some awful free paper in DC last month and this film was the whole hoopla around town there. The story of this flick was all about how they chose to film it in our nations capitol blah blah but by the end of the article a slight mention of our city goes something like “oh yea they’ll be filming just a little bit in Philly”.

I guess a little bit is 2/3rds of the whole shoot.

A couple of weeks ago I got a flyer at my Society Hill apartment (a three story walkup rowhouse) that they were looking for an apartment to film for their movie. So look for filming in some similar type apartment in the city, I guess.
