This Weekend: The New Time

thenewtimes1washedfor-webFRIDAY:
>>> We’re just gonna come right out and say it: The concert/DJ lineups for this weekend are, for the most part, unimpressive. So we just rooted through all of our friends’ friends’ event listings on Facebook, and picked out some stuff that we don’t know dick about, but appealed to us on a gut level nonetheless. Don’t laugh: The whole George W. Bush presidency was done in this fashion, and probably without even the luxury of Facebook. So:
We just love the name of this art show at Room 45 in South Philly: Haunted By the Beauty of Pushing Through the Years, Alex Gartelmann‘s first solo outing of sculture, photos and drawings. And we like the logo for Oma, the new vintage clothing store opening up up in NoLibs tonight.
>>> This is going pretty good so far, right? You’re digging the whole risk-taking/make new friends/do different things of it all, no? OK, this is gonna be a challenge, so let’s see how not lame you are: We’re going to tell you to go to The Fire, of all places, on a Friday night, no less, to see a band whose debut single is called “”Neutral Milk Hotel.” How’s that for stacking the deck? But we swear this will be good: The band is called The New Time (pictured), they’ve got this whole Walkmen-as-told-to-Van-Morrison-on-K-Records vibe, and they are aided and abetted by TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb and Sweetheart Parade, who are also decent. Here’s that single we were talking about:

Right click here to download. See, it’s good, right? Look at you, tryin’ new things!
>>> Oh, and look! Sorted! is having a BBQ outside the Barbary! And Robotique is back at Kung Fu Necktie. Jeez. Our friends’ friends are really, really cool.

SATURDAY:
>>> Alright, magick friends of my friends’ friends eightball, whatchoo got? Aww, they’re dedicating the WXPN Kids Corner Mural at 43rd & Locust! Good on ya, Kids Corner. Every time we listen to you, we’re instantly reminded that children are not entitled little monsters who live by eating only food that is tan and making marriage seem like an insufferable grind. We should listen to our friends less, and to you more. Plus, that “Poop Goes In The Potty” song is friggin’ EPIC.
>>> ART FOR THE CASH POOR at Crane Arts Building. Get into this. You’ll come away with something cheap and amazing, we guarantee.
>>> Skateboard block party that you are not cool enough for. Sorry. If it helps, neither are we.
>>> But Brewerytown’s Art + Soul Food fest? That’s all you!
>>> Been wondering where the hell Plastic Little have been? Us too. Luckily, they are playing this totally crazy party at 941 Theater.

SUNDAY:
>>> Put on your booty shorts, ‘cos it’s the Gay Pride Parade! Parade route: 13th and Locust, east to 11th, north on 11th to Market Street, east to Penn’s Landing, Market to Locust Streets and Columbus Blvd.
>>> Plus: The Sundae party is now every Sunday at the Piazza At Schmidt’s. Hands off my beautiful “Ghost of Mary” drink from The Swift Half. I like you and all, but not that much. Ahh, that’s more like it. Relaxing times. Suntori times.
