A good place to start is with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, who currently have a shortage of over 700 men, meaning 700 young boys looking for positive male role models have been told that nobody's interested. I don't wanna preach, and I am not so nieve as to think that this will end muggings, but the boys who are most likely to commit these crimes are remarkably less likely to do so if they have a positive male role model in their lives.
