Update: Two Chances To Let Your Voice Be Heard On Joan Krajewski’s “Let’s Sell The Parks” Bill

parksYou might have read here last week about a little something called Bill #090380, a truly wrongheaded and unsubtle piece of legislation introduced by City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski that, if passed, would basically let City Council do whatever the hell it wants with any piece of public land the City is responsible for. Now, while we certainly don’t begrudge the City a chance to make a reasonable buck here and there, the bill is so broadly worded and unspecific that, frankly, City Council just can’t be trusted with it. Sorry, guys. Take a look at our earlier post, which includes the full text of the bill, and if it irks you like it irks us, make a point of showing up at either/both of the following:

There will be two opportunities for public voices to participate in discussions on Bill 090380:

- Planning Commission Mtg: Tuesday, May 19th, 1:00pm, 1515 Arch St.,18th Floor

- City Council Rules Committee Hearing: Wednesday, June 3, 2009, 10:00am, City Hall, Rm 400

Way to sneak in that Planning Commission on Election Day, guys. We’re gonna keep an eye on this one — something about the whole thing just smells rotten.

    Is there any connection between this and the Fairmount Park referendum voters passed during the last election?

    @Allan,
    Unlikely, the referendum was to improve efficiency by merging the Parks and Fairmount Park depts, and it was a good idea.

    As for this bill, my sense is that it has more to do with the libraries than the parks but there are some prime mini-parks embedded in neighborhoods that could probably fetch a pretty penny.

    The whole thing is just because a caterer in her district who does business in the park wanted to make his life easier. A classic example of unnecessary legislation to appease a constituent.
