This Weekend: Let’s Do The Time Warp Again
FRIDAY:
>>> I want you to play a game with me: It’s called “2003.” First, go see Peaches rap about sex and dongs and stuff and see if it’s still edgy; back in ‘03, last time I saw her, she was bordering on doing a female Iggy Pop thing that could have really been something. But it’s no longer Bush’s America, and I cant help but wonder if that’s left the milieu Peaches created rudderless. Something makes me bet it hasn’t, as gender politics aren’t administration-specific, unless the University threatens to de-tenure you if you don’t write a paper saying they are.
When you escape with your life in tact from that, duck out back to Fluid, where the DJ night called Dutty Chutney will be going down. This is the “gift” part of the night, because Dutty Chutney is kind of everything that Hollertronix once promised us back in the day but in the end would up delivering too much brainless Southern hip-hop and MGMT remixes instead. We’ve written about these guys before, but listen again: This is video game music gone to India, only to find that Mario & Luigi have both gotten wayyyy into MC Solaar and deepest dub when it gets back. This is music of a new genre, and we think it’s called World Bonkers. Aren’t you glad you live in a CITY?
Then, go to Click, whose weird punctuation marks I officially refuse to type anymore, just like I won’t type out the names of bands who insist that their name is always in all lower case or DJs who have things like “::::::::” on either sides of their names. But the challenge here, at Click at The Barbary, will be a little more difficult than all of that. You’re going to have to finally decide once and for all whether these kids are dancing to techno in quotation marks or not. I’ve been trying to figure it out since ‘03, and I still can’t figure it out. I give up. Game, set and match. It’s your problem now.
>>> And as noted in yesterday’s Noontime Nugget, Welcome To The Terrordome 3, and evening of sketch comedy with Secret Pants, at Johnny Brenda’s.
>>> When you’re in this line of work, and you hear that there’s a band out there called Sex Piano, the reality is, sooner or later, you’re going to wind up on their MySpace page to see if they are good. In this case, they are not. It’s Ween-inspired comedy rock that make light of the whole being-in-a-rock-band thing, but the thing about bands who do this are still rock bands. But this is lot’s of people’s thing, so if, like, Chocolate & Cheese was your defining musical experience, have at it with them at the Millcreek Tavern, kid. Just tell your mom you were at the library or something.
SATURDAY:
>>> It is our great pleasure to report that there’s all kinds of stuff for you to do outside during the day, provided it doesn’t rain. The Trenton Ave. Arts Fest returns up in the Kenz, and with it, the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby, wherein adults put wheels on toilets and bathtubs and race each other in the name of Science! But that’s not the only outside jam: Big Book Sale up in Fairmount arrives — Friday and Saturday and Sunday, in fact — and the Piazza at Schmidt’s does part of its opening weekend with City Paper Trunk Show.
>>> Steven Bloodbath is back in town! HI STEVEN CALL ME I’M SORRY WE DIDNT PLAY MARIOKART ON WEDNESDAY! High School Confidential brings together that wonderful DJ with JHN RDN (already broke my no weird spelling/caps rule, oh well) and Eddie Austin, the single most funny person in the whole city.
>>> And, as we mentioned yesterday, the Swedish all-girl/all-awesome indie pop band Liechtenstein arrives in South Philly for England Belongs To Twee.
SUNDAY:
>>> My God, how much of an incredible superhuman would you be if you woke up, made some ultra-strong French press coffee, and went to Andy Warhol: The Artist & His Critics at Fleisher Art Memorial all by yourself? You’d be a monster of solitude who walks among us collecting knowledge whilst others vibe each other out over brunch. You’d be everything that we could ever hope that we could be. And we believe in you.
