And Now, Your FIRST PLACE NL EAST Philadelphia Phillies

philliesIn case you missed last night’s Phillies game against the St. Louis Cardinals, it kind of had it all: Literally everyone in the starting lineup had at least a base hit, Jayson Werth‘s hot, hot mom was there, and Sarge wondered aloud if he was drunk when his reverb went all kooky. Oh, and the resulting 10-7 win for the Phils landed them in first place in the NL East. And, if you look at the stats, they pretty much did it without Cole Hamels, more or less. Thus far this season, Hamels has appeared in a measly 4 games. A large part of that is due to his injury, but we can’t help but draw a direct correlation between Hamels’ ascendance in the Cashman/Philly Style scene and his increased irrelevance to the Phillies, you know, actually winning things. (How these folks got their claws into this kid we might not ever know; all we know is, if we get another email like this, we’re gonna write this cat off forever.) Of course, hating on Hamels is basically the love that dare not speak its name, and with Hamels’ ankle looking better and better, it would now be Go Time for the dude. Phils rank and file just did their thing and got us to firsties: Can Cole keep us there?

I wish Beerleaguer’s commenters would come over here. I’d love to see a deep SABRmetrics conversation on Philebrity.
