This Weekend: Livin’ Astro
FRIDAY:
>>> There’s so much going on this weekend that we’ve had to get a jump on some of it already, posting about it throughout the week: So you probably already know about the Garotas Suecas show we’re presenting at Kung Fu Necktie tonight, as well as First Friday and Cinefest ‘09.
>>> But what about Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti? We’ve been hearing great things about this tour already, and with Vivian Girls and Tickley Feather rounding out the bill, why, that’s pretty awesome. If your idea of awesome is “rainy druggy indie pop that sounds like movie soundtracks.” As it happens, ours is. At Johnny Brenda’s.
>>> That better part of us would also like to check out The Blue Note Records 75th Anniversary Tour, with Pat Martino, Bill Charlap, Ravi Coltrane, Lewis Nash, Nicholas Payton, Peter Washington and Steve Wilson, all paying homage to quite possibly the best record label the world has ever seen. That’s at the Kimmel Center.
>>> And we haven’t even begun to put a dent into all the good shit going on tonight. Briefly, then: Crocodiles at Juanita & Juan’s (see Noontime Nuggetz below); Sex Dwarf, back at Fluid; Dan Deacon kicking off his Bromst tour here at First Unitarian Church (stream new tracks here) and more First Friday parties/receptions/happy hours at Reward, Grasshopper, and all up and down Frankford Ave. You literally have no excuse not to go out and see your friends and make new ones tonight. The entire city beckons you. Yes, you.
SATURDAY:
>>> Let’s recap what we’ve already told you about, shall we? Philly Spring Cleanup in your ‘hood, The Beautiful Person (La Belle Personne) at 4:15PM at the Prince, Brian Jonestown Massacre at The Troc, and Sebastian Tellier at Making Time. Got it? Good.
>>> But here’s one we haven’t talked about yet: Kool Keith (pictured in his turn-of-the-century “Original Black Elvis” look) at Johnny Brenda’s. In fact, it’s probably safe to say that at some point tomorrow night, Kool Keith, Anton Newcombe from Brian Jonestown Massacre and Sebastian Tellier will all be onstage AT THE SAME TIME at various venues in the city, thereby creating an EVIL GENIUS PSYCHIC TRIANGLE that could just rip a giant hole through the time and space continuum if you happen to be anywhere in the triangular area between The Troc, Starlight Ballroom and JB’s. So, be careful. On the other hand, there is nothing in life you need to know that Kool Keith couldn’t teach you.
>>> And then there’s Judah Friedlander at TLA, Tough Shits Vs. Dark Horse & The Carousels at Tritone, and Superdrag, back from the dead and playing an early show at JB’s.
>>> And finally, just when you thought it might be safe to go to West Philly, it’s Human BBQ XXXI at Pi Lam.
SUNDAY:
>>> PHILS HOME OPENER. Guess what, buddy? You’re gonna be drunk all day!
>>> And Katy Perry at the TLA, because we think it’d be funny, and Charlie Hunter at World Cafe Live, because dude rules, and Benjy Ferree guest DJing Sunday night at 700, because that is my hang, brodeedles. We hope you ate some vegetables.
