Philly Metro To Associated Press: See Ya!

metorIt’s right about now that we’d like to stand up and give some big props to the Philly edition of the Metro, the Swede-owned free daily that has — credit where it’s due — at this point completely re-invented itself since the days when it was the SEPTA freeb. Metro corporate has just announced that, as of April 1, all of its U.S. newspapers will be dropping Associated Press content entirely. Which is a stunning and possibly really savvy move. At a time when most newspapers are cutting internal staff and relying on AP more and more — and getting a much less relevant productthe Metro here in Philly has been staffing up in a bold step to try and own a little more of the local news space. Which sounds crazy, but tell you what: Let’s talk about it again this time next year when there’s no more Daily News. Paging Chris Brennan

Wow! My understanding is that an AP subscription costs beaucoup bucks to newspapers (isn’t this why the DN is now an edition of the Inky, or something?). I am sure you can fund a LOT of reporters doing their own reporting with the cost of that subscription. Plus, since the Metro is in some 80 countries (again, I could be wrong on that) they must have contacts all over the world to provide national and international news. Good for them.

Good news. A Metro more focused on local news will be better.

I’m not sure why you’re paging me. This post doesn’t seem to have anything to do with:

    A) You being a hypocritical sell-out shill for a car company or…

    B) Your hypocritical “Do as I say, not as I blog” policy on reporting or…

    C) Your hypocritical complaints that your media criticism should never been criticized by the media since you exempted yourself from any ethics or standards in the policy noted above.

Please now feel free to wet your pants with angry Tippy replies about how I don’t get it. It just proves the point.
