Film Fest Picks: Opening Weekend

Love, Soccer and Other Catastrophes

… follows the intertwining lives of a five-man Italian intramural soccer team. Each member of the team brings a little piece of their personality to the field, just as they take a bit of their playing style to their drama filled daily lives. Sex, job stress, sex, girlfriend-stealing, more sex, and spouse-drugging are just a few of the stressors that push and pull the team as they makes their way through the soccer season. While the film has its corny moments and slightly chauvinist undertones, they are easily overshadowed by the adorable story and lovable characters. Love, Soccer, and other Catastrophes is an excellent date movie; so grab a special someone and walk with them hand in hand into the theater and 116 minutes later, you’ll be smoochin’ it up as the credits roll. (Either that or you’ll be signing up for the nearest beer league.)
Friday March 27th 2:30 at the Ritz East Saturday March 28th 12:15 at The Bridge, Sunday March 29th 4:45 at Ritz 5. Ticketing info here.

Herb and Dorothy

In a one bedroom apartment in New York, Herb and Dorothy Vogel collected one of the world’s most important collections of minimalist and conceptional art. From the very first scene of the movie when the Vogels exit a cab and enter an art gallery, they romance you. Their relationship with each other, the artists they buy from and their love of artwork is so passionate and so intriguing. This documentary covers the biography of the couple and explores the way that they acquired so many works on such a limited budget. Truly wonderful.

Saving Grace B. Jones

(No trailer available.) In a 1950s-era Missouri town, the life of a couple is thrown into chaos when the husband’s sister Grace, played by Tatum O’Neal, is released from the local asylum and comes to live with the family. This movie is downright charming, until things take a turn for the worst. Do not miss this one.
