Joan Rivers Is Weird (And Has A Stand-up Gig At The Gershman Y)

joanriversPress releases — we get ‘em. And oh, how we get them. And sometimes, it’s all we can do to stare at them and think about how amazing it is that “things” are happening in Philadelphia every day, even though they may not be “things” you would actually ever want to, like, go to, and in that, there is a kind of comfort that you live in a large metropolitan area and the power of your “No” actually can mean something. Case in point: Joan Rivers’ one-night-only, standalone gig at the Gershman Y on May 2. For one thing, who even knew that Rivers did stand-up anymore? For another, however weird you thought Rivers and her daughter, Melissa, were before, watching this season of Celebrity Apprentice has shown us that they are a kind of bona fide showbiz Freak Royalty, to the point that it’s surprising that Rivers works in front of an audience at all anymore. (And hasn’t, instead, hit upon that Michael Jackson thing where you say you’re making a record with Akon but really eating monkey brains and trying to quash News of the World reports about how you are dying, dying, dying. In this regard, Rivers’ perseverance of gainful, non-reality TV employ is actually admirable.) Anyway, I don’t know what my point is here, I’m still kinda waking up — I think I just wanted us all to look at the crazy Jocelyn Wildenstein visage of one of America’s Living Comedic Legends and think, God, how long life is, how weird the roads we take are, and Jesus Christ, the things people will do to stay young. It’s amazing, and it never stops.

I swear she had the skin of babies transplanted on her face. Even in HD on TV, her skin looks so soft and plump. It’s remarkable, really.

On the marquee it reads: “Joan Rivers: Now with 20% more Amanda Lepore!”

All kidding and reality tv aside: Joan is still one of the greatest standup comedians around. She’s like the female Don Rickles.

It really is amazing to see what she has done to herself. I don’t have HD, and I have to thank my personal God for that considering what she has done to stay “young.” But like Lord says, she can still rock out the comedy!
