Pop quiz: Who is still sweating the Phillies — and Philadelphia fans — harder than Christian Bale after a lighting fuck-up? Answer: That would be the New York Mets, and all who sail in them. Even though the Phils don’t even face the Mets again until May 1, the Mhetoric is already heating up. Our pals at The 700 Level have already wisely pointed out that a lot of this is largely the creation of the New York media, which in some ways is even sadder than it would be if actual Mets were shit-talking the World Fucking Champions. Sadder still? Mets fans are even worse. As for Phillies fans? Not to say that we don’t care, it’s just that… we don’t care as much. And weird rich person Cole Hamels? Well, he was just answering a question as literally and unemotionally as possible. Someday, a cultural anthropologist will study this moment and tie it to everything else in the world that is a clear indicator that NYC just isn’t what it used to be.
