Ripped From The Philebrity Reader: First Friday Roundup
First Friday can still offer up goodies from time to time. This month’s instructions: Start at basekamp, which has been showing this nifty exhibit “An Atlas,” featuring work from a group calling themselves “radical cartographers” who are trying to leverage mapmaking for social change. Buy their atlas, which is gorgeous and only thirty bones.
Next, head a few blocks west to the Wexler Gallery, which we’ve admittedly feared ever since we spotted a $40,000 credenza. Vivian Beer‘s furniture pushes the definition of the word, accompanied by paintings from Marilyn Kirsch. Their kickoff was in January, but it’s worth a stop.
Then, hop on the 5 bus as it passes by and head up to Projects Gallery for sexytime: “Guilty Pleasures” examines desire, addiction, love, and the guilt you feel after you realize that you’ve killed the inflatable doll.
Be forewarned: Less promising is “Obama-o-Rama.” While a sexy President for sure – and while he’s depicted by some well-known Philadephia artists – we won’t tell you who they are. Because what we’ve seen of the exhibit so far looks a bit like it came out of The Charter Elementary School For The Best Artists Ever Who Are Really Good Can You Believe They’re Only Eight Years Old? But that other stuff – worth a look-see.
All openings Friday from 6-ish until free drinks run out. “An Atlas.” Through March 15. basekamp, 723 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Free.
Vivian Beer and Marilyn Kirsch. Through February 28. Wexler Gallery, 201 North Third Street, Philadelphia. Free.
“Guilty Pleasures” and “Obama-o-Rama.” Through February 28. Projects Gallery, 629 North Second Street, Philadelphia. Free.
