WDAS-FM: They Rolled With MLK, So Today, Roll With Them

mlkmural.jpgOh, hi! Happy Martin Luther King Day! We debated long and hard about whether we should be posting today — like, are we not serving the memory of the man correctly if we toil today? — but then we realized that if you’re reading this, you are probably stuck in a cubicle somewhere because the company you work for is hateful and racist through and through, and the least we could do is just keep you company and raise your spirits with another Gregg Foreman post. (Coming soon.) But if that rationale rubs you the wrong way, know this: We’re not working hard — in fact, we’re going out for pho soon! yayyyy! — and we are trying to cook up some MLK posts. Which brings us to this bit: When you celebrate (or even think of, or read about) MLK today, soundtrack it all with WDAS, the legendary Philly soul station. (That is, if you’re not already otherwise occupied with the MLK Day Of Service which, so far as we know, almost never includes reading Philebrity, in which case… ) Anyway, we bring up WDAS because there’s a whole site dedicated to the station’s role in the Civil Rights struggle in Philadelphia — and it’s pretty fascinating. Between staging concerts and rallies and the station’s biggest stock in trade (TALKING TO THE PEOPLE), WDAS played a crucial role in doing everything it could to make this city just a little bit less of a racist hellhole. And today, they keep on keepin’ on. Sure, they’re doing it with Robin Thicke, but let me tell you: We’ve had WDAS pumping in the office for the last hour, and we feel GREAT. Warm and fuzzy like a Cosby sweater knitted by God himself.
