If A Day Without A Gay Falls In The Forest, Can Anyone… Wait, What?
Hey gays! Enjoying your day off? What are you doing? If you have a minute, can you parse this whole Day Without A Gay thing for us? Because frankly, as theoretical protest-type construct, it’s kind of muddy. Like, we get this part: If all the gays disappeared for a day, that would be sick and wrong and the world would be an even dumber place than it already is. But unlike A Day Without A Mexican, which was very successful in FREAKING PEOPLE OUT because all the Mexicans just straight up disappeared (easier in film form than in real life, it turns out), Day Without A Gay requests that its participants “call in gay” to work and instead donate their time to some form of service, which probably results in an actual Day With Extra Gays in places like soup kitchens and stuff. Thereby defeating of the whole purpose of freaking people out with the strange feeling that, you know, all their fucking gays have gone missing and now there’s no one to talk with. But instead, with this service clause, we KNOW where all the gays are. We’re not freaked out. We’re not sad. Because we know you’ll be back. And it’s like you already are! WELCOME BACK, GAYS! Gosh, we missed you. Phew. Don’t ever do that again.

umm…i called in sick today, will people now assume I’m gay? I mean, even if I am gay i don’t want people making assumptions about me, that’s just rude.

I thought the whole thing was supposed to be a boycott on spending money …?

This made zero sense to me because if you have an employer supportive enough not to be seriously pissed about you “calling in gay” you’re not teaching them anything they don’t already know.
On the flip side, the people who really need to learn what gay people contribute to society are the ones likely to fire you for abusing your sick time.

as a gay myself, i’m all for movements and political gestures, but i agree – this idea was not well-thought out. If the point is to show where our gay dollars go, that’s understandable, but this idea was so poorly thought out, i did not take part. i know TONS of gays, naturally, and i don’t think i know any who called out ‘gay’ today.
additionally i work for the govt, and no one would notice if i took off today. And if i called out “gay,” my manager would say “what does that even mean bobby? we know you’re gay; so is that sick time or vacation time? enjoy your day!”
