PMA’s 20-Inch Rocky Is A $468 Way To Say “I Hate You” This Christmas

One of thee big stories on Philebs circa 2006 was how City Hall sold out the Philadelphia Museum Of Art, strongarming those poor aesthetes into plopping the godforsaken friggin’ Rocky Statue down in front of one of America’s finest art museums — an act not unlike putting a pig onto a fine silk hat. It still provokes Tourette’s-like outbursts when we think about it, but this year, the PMA just might be making some fucking lemonade out of this lemon. Finally. Retailing at $468, the PMA online store is now offering a Rocky Replica 20″, cast in resin, bronze plated, hand-patinaed, and made of pure, delicious irony. And you’ve just got to love this bit from the product description:

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is known around the world for its superb collection of art and its outstanding architecture; however it is also known for the role it played in the famous scene of the original Rocky film and sequels. [A. Thomas] Schomberg’s sculpture was placed at the foot of the Museum’s East Stairs in September 2006.

Which is a much nicer way of saying, “Our museum rules at life. But it also has a giant piece of shit in front of it that attracts rubes and proles as though and as if they were actual human flies. Would you like to buy a replica of this steaming pile, perhaps?” At at twenty inches tall, it’s pretty much the perfect size to shove up someone’s ass. Just saying.

I am reveling in this as much as you are. It’s hard for me to drive past the shit storm of tourists pointing at the statue. Alas, the museum is much more enjoyable without the tourists making ridiculous attempts at sounding smart.

“You see this here, honey? I think this one is really famous! It’s by that guy Mo-nett.”

I can’t believe how much love that statue gets. It’s very rare to pass it and not see people gathered around it for photos.

I live across the street and I love how much joy people get out of posing next to Rocky. One of the reasons the PMA couldn’t stand it was it never brought people in to the museum. I guess they solved that for the top 2% of the country who enjoy Rocky.
