This Weekend: South Street Serenade

FRIDAY:
>>> Oh my God. Look how cute The Bee Team are (pictured). We bring it up not just because of their shambolic, fun, almost-holiday-ish rootsy indie-pop — which is notable, as “Ghost Song” amply illustrates — but also because, as the holidays approach and the national touring schedules freeze to a halt through March, THIS is the kind of stuff that’s gonna get you through the winter. The Bee Team’s at Tritone tonight with Joe Jack Talcum (he was in some band called The Dead Milkmen once) and JC Carroll, a London first-generation punk rocker whose credentials include fronting The Members and working with Johnny Thunders,
Glen Matlock, Dee Dee Ramone, Rat Scabies, Joe Strummer, Frank Tovey, and Fad Gadget. Try to imagine the seven-inch collection this man has. Whoa.
>>> I don’t have any literature in front of me on exactly what Appetite For Destruction and Back in Black at the TLA is, but I think I’m picking up what they’re putting down. And then I’m putting that down and picking up many, many beers. Very many beers.
>>> And then I’m going around the corner to Sex Dwarf at Fluid and randomly making out with people who know the words to OMD songs. And I was gonna write more picks for Friday night, but then it struck me that what we have here is a South Street Weekend Picks Trifecta, which NEVER happens. So let me put it to you this way: When was the last time you spent a WHOLE NIGHT on South Street? That’s what I thought. And doesn’t it bum you out like it bums me out what has happened to the once and future Hippest Street In Town? So do this: Go to South Street. Shop a little. Eat something. Get hammered at a show or DJ night. Spend money on the businesses there that you think should survive, those brave souls weathering not just this economy but also the plunder of a street that, if you are reading this, just might have changed your life way back in the wayback. Do I have to invoke this to jog your memory of the majesty that once laid in that silver mile? Becuase if I have to, I will.

SATURDAY:
>>> See Phashionista for details on Northern Lights II, Standard Craft, Traveling Wares and more. Also, The Philadelphia Independent Craft Market is back at 941 Theater. Looks like somebody’s getting a scarf this Christmas!
>>> As duly noted all over the place this week: Walkmen/Beach House/Foggy Notion DJs at TLA; Mercury Rev/Dean & Britta/Like A Fox at The Troc.
>>> But holy wow this edition of picks is light on dance parties. So take your pick: Hurrah at Medusa (Bye Bye Chris Rogy edition and whoa how this town is losing DJs this month); DJ Opal Rock at L’Etage and as always, Tastee Treats at Fluid, should you want to continue the whole “I am going to positively affect the small local business economy by spending all my money on South Street” thing. Which, as we noted, you should. You absolutely should.

SUNDAY:

Harry Potter marathon on ABC Family, the television station that OWNS this holiday shit. Also, if you type in “Harry Potter Weezer” into YouTube, this is what comes up. Modern world, come here and give us a kiss. You’re fucking hilarious. Have a great weekend, everybody!
