This Weekend: Anything You Want, U Can Has
FRIDAY:
>>> Question: Is the Friday after Thanksgiving the second biggest drinking night of the year? Only your barkeep knows for sure. There’s a heap of good shows and stuff going on tonight, but even if you don’t want to indulge in rockism or waiting for the B-more club sound to, like, fucking evolve already (lest it be… rockism), let’s first give some props to Autumn 08 Philly Pub Culture. With friends in town, it’s always the wisest way barring a house party: These days, we are feeling Prohibition Taproom and The Institute in the 13th and Spring Garden Eraserhead Neighborhood (check Phoodie.info write-ups here and here, and props to Shawn Kilroy for finally giving this part of town a name). But there’s also happy hour at Zahav, the ongoing resurgence of 700 (post on this next week, we promise) and… insert your favorite winter-warmer haunt here. Tip your bartenders well, folks: They’re not recession-proof, either.
>>> And about those shows: Dr. Dog is at Starlight Ballroom, and the very 90s indie-pop-sludge-ish Vivian Girls round out a bill of sympathetic garage (King Khan, Love City) at Johnny Brenda’s.
>>> And then there’s the Turnaround Vs. Immediate Anniversary Party we told you about earlier (Barbary), and at Medusa, there is I Can Has Bass, the Flamin Hotz label night featuring the fantastically stupid Claire Hux from B-More, dropping such hits as “2 Much Dick On The Dancefloor” and “Bust U In Da I.” No cover, and well beerlarious.
SATURDAY:
>>> Each year, we’re like, “OMG, for real people, THIS is the year we are going to see Trans Siberian Orchestra!” Because honestly. What even is that? Two shows at the Wachovia Center, don’t come if you don’t like heavy metal Christmas power ballads and also consider our friendship OVER.
>>> And now’s the time to take us up on that pub advice above, because barring Broadzilla with Finger On The Pulse DJs at Barbary/Victor Victor Band at Tritone, ain’t shit happening ‘cept red wine and records at yours. I’m bringing a zip drive with that Benjy Ferree song and I’m making you all listen to it until you finally agree with me that dude is the second (badly needed) coming of Freddie Mercury.
SUNDAY:
>>> How stoked am I that it’s the time of year once again for shows like Rosie Thomas and friends Present: A Very Rosie Christmas at World Cafe Live? I don’t know, I’ll have to answer you later, because right now I’m snorting candy canes and playing air guitar to this.
