Rumblings: Books A Million

>>> ‘Tis a most lonely, desolate time of the season for book lovers. For one, you’ve got this libraries thing. And as frustrating as it is to watch Siobahn Reardon and Bizarro Nutter put their hands over their ears and go “LALALALALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU!” each time someone tries to come up with a solution to keep those 11 libraries open, there is some hope: While everyone’s been screaming, the Friends Of The Free Library have been quietly tapping up to 60 philanthropists, corporations and universities to help out, as well as coming up with alternate scenarios like four day weeks and so on. Reards and Biz-Nutts, you can only sing for so long; eventually, you’re going to have to listen. [Inky]
>>> Oh, but here comes another bummer: Robin’s Books is closing. Apparently, too many people thought it was a library. [TheClog]
>>> And lastly, we leave you with a spot of relief: Joe Queenan finally admits he’s not that good. [NYT]

    Book related heads up:

Phillycentric photographer Zoe Strauss* is having a book release/book signing party tomorrow night (Sat.)

Copies of America are $30 ($5 paperback?) and there will also be pizza and two kegs of Yuengling lager.

    “PHILADELPHIA, PA:
    AMERICA BOOK SIGNING

    NOVEMBER 29, 2008

    8PM-11PM

Quaker City String Band Clubhouse (2nd Floor)
    1943 South 3rd Street
    Philadelphia, PA 19148

(Between Mifflin and McKean and directly across from Furness High School… the block magically turns from 2nd St into 3rd St on the block between Mifflin and McKean so just note that if you are taking 2nd St up, YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT STREET)”
