Jumbo Theater Redux Gets Negged By NIMBYs, Developer
Well, Fishtown, you won’t have Avram Hornik to kick around — maybe ever! On the heels of F-town’s noble working poor chanting down his Babylon (read: what would have probably been a very civilized World Cafe Live type venue controversial only to those who relish Fishtown’s ongoing, profound un-worldliness), the restauranteur has pulled out of the Jumbo Theater project at Front & Girard. (Shown at right in the glory days.) So for now, the property stays vacant, Fishtown stays rap-free (unless of course you count all the Eminem lookalikes zombie-walking EVERY FUCKING STREET in the ‘hood, prowling for loose Oxys), and Front & Girard stays gloriously, ridiculously 1980-ish. Nice work, NIMBYs.

It might be convenient to blame it on the locals, but could this also be a case of the credit crunch blues?

What exactly would these folks welcome, a Big K?

Although it may be moot for now, but I’m not entirely convinced of this “World Cafe vibe” you’ve mentioned. Having been to Lucy’s, Drinkers, and Noche, I was fully expecting Linkin Park soundalikes to perform there.

Front and Girard is Kensington, not Fishtown.

Guys please, this had NOTHING to do with any kind of NIMBy mentality. It was about the credit crunch. If a developer really wants something they will get it.
