99.999999999% Likely That The Roots Will Become Jimmy Fallon’s House Band
A couple weeks back you might’ve heard about The Roots shooting a promo in Philly (at Kung Fu Necktie) for Jimmy Fallon’s show that’s slouching towards late night to be born.
But oh, there may be more. Supposedly (we haven’t seen it) NahRight.com had video of ?uestlove giving up the goods about a rumored Roots semi-retirement into becoming Fallon’s house band when he takes over Conan O’Brien’s show next year. If you want to see how wide the gossip’s spread, look here or here or here or here or here (aside: a Wu Tang boot from Fila? Whatever happened to Wu Wear?) or here. For indignation, check the allhiphop.com boards. The video’s not on Nah Right anymore, and YouTube doesn’t have it either – if you have a link, send it our way? We don’t have independent confirmation, but like everybody else, we believe EVERYTHING we read on the Internet. As you mull, peep the cover of “Masters of War” from this summer’s Roots Picnic we’ve embedded here.
Should such chatter be true, only one question remains: Will Black Thought become our generation’s Ed McMahon? And what will it mean for Publishers Clearing House?

Saw the video a couple of days ago. ?uestlove is definitely sitting there, and he definitely indicates that The Roots are going to be doing the house band thing for Jimmy Kimmel, and so it’s unlikely that they’re going to be play any shows any distance from NYC. I believe they’re contracted to play for Kimmel something like 44 weeks a year, and they don’t think they’re going to spend their mere 8 weeks off each year on tour.
The Roots, as we know them, are dead.
