Great Moments In Corporate Posturing: Oh, Get A Room Already, Verizon And Comcast!
So at long last, Verizon’s Fios service is making inroads into Philly. This is notable not just because it took the big V like five kajillion years to wire our burgh with its piece-of-shit DSL service — thereby lowering Philadelphians’ expectations of the company for years to come — but also because, when and if, the pipe ever gets laid*, Fios will be the first cable service to ever directly compete with Comcast within city limits. God, is it getting hot in here?
This is Verizon spokeswoman Sharon Schaffer:
“Now, for the first time, Verizon is going to be competing head-to-head with Comcast (in the city).”
Comcast spokesman Jeff Alexander says the cable giant is not worried:
“They’re trying to play catch-up, and that won’t be an easy feat.”
Then, right there in line at the 16th & JFK Starbucks, Jeff and Sharon’s eyes locked. All went silent. Next thing they knew, they were at the Warwick, putting themselves back together. It was only 3:30 in the afternoon, but both of them knew: Nothing would ever be the same again.
