Breakout Philebrity: Josh Owen

Who He Is: Amazing industrial designer dude based out of Philly whose work might already be in your house.
What He Does: In addition to teaching at Philadelphia University, Owen has designed a whole grip of home-furnishings goodies out of his studio in South Philly. Among them: The knock-off bowling pin lamp, the tone knob lamp, the xx coat rack… we could go on.
Hated On For: Nothing! We’re guessing that the only people who could hate on this stuff would be sworn enemies of simplicity and and clean elegance in design.
Loved By: Design geeks far and wide. Said geeks will have the chance to quiz Owen up close on October 16, when he’s the guest of honor at a DesignPhiladelphia event at Fork. Sponsored by Design Within Reach, the event will premiere his SOS Stool to the U.S. market.
Over/Under: Unlike fellow Philly-connected industrial design honcho Karim Rashid, whose work is already feeling kind of dated, we suspect that you’ll be seeing Owen’s stuff for years and years to come, in large part due to his understated simplicity. He’s fun but not gimmicky. Keep an eye out.

Here at the tourism office (GPTMC) we love him too. We are actually bringing a group of design writers to meet him (and other DesignPhiladelphia folks) on Thursday. Josh is a great ambassador for Philadelphia’s design scene.
