This Weekend: I Just Want Back In Your Heah
FRIDAY:
>>> Well, it took about ten years and probably millions of dollars, but I finally don’t hate Tegan and Sara! And it’s not because of their weird femullets. And it’s not because I have heard any new song by them lately except for “Back In Your Head,” video’d at right, and pronounced “Back In Your Heah.” I guess it’s because this is the present-day version of 80s sophisti-pop, where people could make records like this and this, have hits, and then never be seen from again. Tegan and Sara, of course, are never going to disappear because they are non-biodegradable. They play the Electric Factory tonight, and I’m not going, but for a whole generation of gawky young girls, it’s the Blow Monkeys and Swing Out Sister all over again. And there is nothing wrong with that. Have fun, ladies.
>>> I don’t mean to dwell on this, but you know who definitely owned Blow Monkeys and Swing Out Sister records? Margaret Cho. These bands were like THEE fag-hag soundtrack of the late 80s, and if nothing else, Cho has at long last given dignity to the valuable role fag-hags have played in our society, which sounds like a dig, but isn’t. Cho has done all kinds of bits on this very topic, and even tho her new VH-1 show is kind of a letdown (I just don’t get the midget lady), CHO RULES ANYWAY. She is at the Merriam Theater. If you close your eyes and following the screeching, you’ll be there in no time.
>>> And finally, DJs Robert Drake & Marilyn Thomas not only OWN BlowMonk/SwingOutSis wax, they probably will even PLAY them for you if you make a big enough deal about it. Their monthly Sex Dwarf part is back at Fluid tonight and something in the zeitgeist is like whoa today. Is it 1988? I promise to stop talking about the Blow Monkeys and Swing Out Sister now.
>>> In non-bands-I-need-to-stop-talking-about news, Chromeo is playing at the Troc. I cannot even pretend to like this group but I know some of you do and this is supposed to be about the exchange of information, so, yes: Chromeo is playing at the Troc.
SATURDAY:
>>> Are you noticing? We have a really rare beast here: One of those perfect fall weekends where the weather is gonna be amazing, and it’s miraculously not bogged down with tons of shows competing for your attention. (Oh, but there is that one show… )Here’s the best news: It’s going down to 52 degrees at night! Too soon for grog? Yes? No? Hmm. Could I interest you in a Dream Academy video?
I think I need to quit doing Weekend Picks.
SUNDAY:
>>> Philly Zine Fest 2008 at the Rotunda! Noon-6pm.
>>> And one of those Imaginational Anthem things at Brickbat Books.
>>> GO PHILS!

Man I checked these girls out at SXSW a few years back and was pretty pleasantly surprised. Even though their songs make my dick limp now, I slightly enjoyed one or two when they came on in shuffle. Now they just look like total manbians (again) I aient even going near that music.

Y’all are getting really lazy with Friday posting. Also, God willing, Phils shouldn’t have to play Sunday at all.
