Solo Nightclub To Entertain White Rock Refugees This Fall
Ahhh, Delaware Ave.: Mooks rush in, or at least used to, where angels fear to tread. But as the center of the Mookiverse has shifted in these last few years — it’s more of a Mook Diaspora now, spread across Old City, Northern Liberties, Manayunk and beyond — Delaware Avenue has been having a bit of an identity crisis. (Hell, we can’t even agree on what to call it, but so help me God, it is NOT Columbus Blvd. Please.) Gone are the days when you could drink from Rock Lobster straight down to Maui; these days, there’s nothing but questions. Is Delaware Ave. a place to gamble? Is it a place to attend festivals? Or is it just a place to get shot?
Add to the list: Is it a place to rock? That’s what 94 WYSP and Origivation are gambling on. The two have put down stakes at Solo Nightclub (formerly Egypt) for a Friday night series of local rock shows, starting in October, hosted by YSP’s Jennifer Reed. And looking at the lineup — bands like Grind City, Two Miles High, Pawnshop Roses — it’s a far cry from the last time you had a reason to go to Solo such as seeing Akon. Says Origivation‘s Brian Cronin: “I just think Philly needs a bigger venue to play local music with a party atmosphere. Bring the party back to original music, everyone seems so uptight.” Who does? We’re loose as a goose! But not for nothing: Maybe a lil’ Akon/Pawnshop Roses mashup? That, to me, finally, definitively, would say “Delaware Avenue.”

they had better call it “Solo On The Waterfront” in their radio ads, to retain some of that Egypt flavor.

Ha! “Mook diaspora.”
