This Weekend: Common People
FRIDAY:
>>> Picking up on the whole Bookends theme from earlier today (scroll down), our legal correspondent and I have a white hot man-date that involves drinks at the Union League, longstanding jazz badass Jack DeJohnette at the Kimmel, and then a visit with Bret Michaels’ old piece Janine (no last name necessary, we’re all friends here) at Club Risque. If this night had a name like DJ night, it would be something like OPPRESSOR’S DELIGHT. People can we please freak out like AIG brass on a bender please?
>>> But you, you wanna do whatever common people do: Motorhead at the Electric Factory, or Ice Cube at the TLA. I dare you to be that guy and wear shorts.
>>> OR, get into a local band for the first time in forever: North Lawrence Midnight Singers, who have this great Beachwood Sparks/Gram Parsons vibe, have their record release at the M Room. (Video at right.)
>>> Otherwise, think MOGWAI, God’s own best living evidence of blissful sludge, warm up for ATP at the Starlight Ballroom. Good God there’s a lot going on tonight. (Note: All of Oppressors believe in God. Deal with it, you East Coast Elites! Oh wait. Shit.)
>>> And that’s not even getting to the DJ nights: Turnaround Vs. Immediate at Barbary, Robotique’s one-year anniversary at Medusa, and on and on. You’ll find something to do, I just know it.
SATURDAY:
>>> God, remember how unstoppable Built To Spill felt circa Perfect From Now On? Guess what? Tonight starts a two-night stint where they perform that album in its entirety at the Trocadero.
>>> Attn. hacky sack sharks: Give Fest at Liberty Lands will be loaded with easy marks.
>>> Amanda Blank & Rose Luardo at the Megawords Storefront, 7pm.
>>> And Phileb commenter “fuckermost” would have definitely wanted you to know that Dandy Warhols are at the TLA.
SUNDAY:
“Philadelphia without revolution, industry, or influence,” says author Nathaniel Popkin, “lives on by invention.” The Possible City, the title of his new book, emerges from our dreams. Here, in the loving hand of the city planner-turned-writer, is the architecture of Philadelphia’s present resurgence. Here are the city’s beguiling founding ideals, the physical ruins of its might, and the search, amidst row house streets, for elevation, for an open city that delights, inspires, and rewards.
Well, shit, dude, you’ve got my attention. Popkin speaks at Johnny Brenda’s at 8pm, and it’s free.
>>> Meanwhile, buzzworthy scuzzers Vivian Girls, FNU Ronnies, Black Time and Static Static all congregate at Danger Danger Gallery. As the bands are playing, Molly Ringwald sits across a table from Dweezil Zappa and her friend that’s supposed to be 17 but looks 45 and asks, with heavy portent, Hey, have you ever thought about dating a RICH GUY? The question hangs heavy in the air, and Duckie waits outside with a younger, more charming Andrew Dice Clay.
