Disco Knowledge: When God Closes Down One Really Cool/Unlikely Party In A Guido Venue, He Opens Another

Never let it be said that the DJs of Philly do not fight the good fight. Constantly rebelling against the nightlife tyranny proscribed to a too-small loop of recognized, “decent” venues, these intrepid souls continually cart PAs and decks into the most unlikely of spaces, ever with the twinkle in their eyes and the feeling that “Hey, I know it’s kind of a weird venue, but I think we could make something work here!” Often, this spirit is nothing less than pioneering and enterprising: To take a venue away from its own documented and well-known cheesiness is something this Great Country was built on. Do you think the Quakers got here and thought, “You know, these Indians have a great venue and all, but just think how much cooler it would be if we put a slammin’ PA in here and somebody came in and took pics a la LastNightsParty.com?” Why, of course they did!
But it doesn’t always work. So goodbye and fond farewell to The Block Party at Cavanaugh’s River Deck, held by Philadelphyinz; their last run in that space is tonight, and lo, they did fight the good fight, but as DJ Apt One informed us, they “simply ran out of rope.” Bummer. But fear not! Just as we hear that, there’s this, from our friend Luis Cancel of DJ troupe/new urban pioneers Strawberry Mansion, who’ve set their sights on re-settling a South Philly staple:

strawberry mansion will be starting a new night.
it’s at vesuvio’s. it’s called Dreamland.
we’ll have Finger On the Pulse (NYC) guest DJing.
3 floors. outdoor seating. good food. pool tables. dancefloor.
cigarette machine. two bars. the best music. and it’s in practically everyone’s neighborhood.
YES! starts July 26th!!!

Did you hear that, motherfuckers! There’s a CIGARETTE MACHINE! This is going to be the jumpoff! And I know it sounds like we’re kidding, but we’re not. We love smoking, and we love getting out of the circled-wagons loop that often kills the soul of This Thing We All Share. Out Thing. God bless you, new urban pioneers. We’ll be out on the pavement, bumming smokes.
