This Weekend: Your No-Rock’N'Roll Fun
FRIDAY:
>>> Philosophical/etiquette question: In weather like this, is it acceptable to have open scorn for all bands and DJs who would rather drag you into their 4-tiered bill/night than leave you to your vodka lemonades on the roof and long, air-conditioned marathons of Real World XX, rocking the water ice with the one you love? Are those that would rather jam themselves (and you) into the same venues, hearing the same tracks, the same bands, drinking the same drinks, to be reviled or pitied? When nightlife morphs into idea-less, close, cloistered nightdeath, who is to blame? I think I have an answer: Only those that tolerate it. So do this: Go to Cianfrani Park, 8th & Fitz, at 7pm for the little outdoor concert they’re having with Iron, or sneak some booze into Washington Square Park, eat/drink somewhere al fresco (sneak out on the balcony at Bar XIX at the Bellevue), priceline a room at the Loew’s, or, in short, do anything whatsoever to resist the tyranny of clubs. They’ll do you no good tonight. If you really wanna know what you are “missing,” hit up listings.
SATURDAY:
>>> Now this is more like it: The Paul Green School of Rock Festival with DEVO at Festival Pier. Yes, you’ll have to sit through The Hold Steady, but this is your penance for being white. Just thank God it’s not worse. I mean, it kind of is, but seriously, I’m trying to get out of here as quick as possible. Now is not the time to discuss the caucasian’s (thankfully) fading cultural relevance and the semiotics of race in 2008 America.
>>> OR! The Punk Rock Flea Market! See Phashionista today for a special report.
>>> And of course, hang outside at the Naval Yard on Saturday night for Paine’s World with Pink Skull, The Yah Mos Def, Broadzilla, Emynd & Bo, live skating, crazy projections, shuttle bus drunken-ness and so, so, so much more.
SUNDAY:
>>> OK, now that the crowds are gone and Denise Richards: It’s Complicated is officially the most maddening show on TV, now you can surrey on down to a cool little rock show. Behold: The Endless Boogie record release party at Johnny Brenda’s. We’ll be talking about this record a little more next week, but for now, suffice to say that it’s like somebody dipped their Maui Wowee in your Acapulco Gold and brought you back this awesome t-shirt. Stay cool, my fellow Democrats, stay cool.

Rooftops and kiddie pools are for turkeys! Get thee out to the deep pines and groove to the tree frogs and night hawks this weekend. S’free.

…better yet, take that kiddie pool and start a bog garden. Greensgrow is carrying carnivorous pitcher plants right now–but leave some for Heather and Norm.
