This Weekend: Pop It Like It’s Hot
FRIDAY:
>>> Of course the main thing happening all weekend long is Popped! Philadelphia, which readers of this site surely must know about by now. So peruse the schedule for yourself, and meanwhile, we’ll do it this way:
Today’s Must-See Popped Pick: Slick Rick. He just got a FULL PARDON from NY guv David Paterson, and it’s gonna be a celebration, bitches!
>>> DJ night-wise, there’s a lot of old standbys happening: Turnaround Vs. Immediate at Barbary for all your soul-clap needs, Robotique at Medusa for that oldstyle Euro disco vibration, and And Dim Sum’s Spin The Bottle at the Khyber for just about everything else. NOW can we get some new standbys happening? Wake up, Philly! Sheesh. Allow us to make a request: There needs to be a great Friday night funky punky reggae party. Make it happen.
>>> I’m totally wearing my Cosby Sweater to Maze w. Frankie Beverly/Chaka Khan at the Mann because my Huxtability is unstoppable. Come here, my Love, and I will sing you the hook from Kanye’s “Through The Wire.”
>>> Other live music of note: Phil Lesh at Festival Pier (go for the nitrous, stay for the Levon Helm); the dark, moody Unwed Sailor at North Star Bar; and Annuals/Hymns/East Hundred at Millcreek Tavern. Holy shit that’s a lot of Friday Night.
SATURDAY:
>>> Today’s Must-See Popped Pick: Tie: The Ting Tings at 1pm, because they are about to get enormo-huge and you’ve got dibs, and Vampire Weekend at 8pm because we called it all those months ago and we are totally standing by that shit. As the great Jayson Musson says, fuck your blog, son.
>>> Oh, but I forgot, you are some crazy rock snob who is just so overrrrrrrr everything: In this case, give yourself a proper mindblow’d with “A Tribute to the Sun City Girls – Brothers Unconnected – Alan Bishop & Richard Bishop” at Johnny Brenda’s. This is some of the craziest music ever made, and as a plus, there will be plenty of people there who you can use that line about not owning a TV on. Win-win!
>>> And, over 40 vendors at the Philadelphia Independent Craft Market at 941 Theater in NoLibs from 11am-6pm. Flyer’s in listings.
SUNDAY:
>>> Today’s Must-See Popped Pick: We’re gonna punt and say the entire Downstairs at World Cafe Live bill, for both its originality and local bent. Witness:
5:15 Gildon Works
6:15 PWRFL Power
7:15 Tickley Feather
8:15 O’Death
9:45 The Capitol Years
10:15 Daniel Johnston
Not bad, right?
>>> And then wash it all down at Sweet Jane Sundays at Tattoed Mom. It’s officially summer now, and if you’re not being irresponsible on a Sunday night and catching drunk breezes on your bike ride home late at night, then, what, pray tell, is it all for? Happy Summer, Everyone! And at the risk of flingin’ re-runs, let us send you this heartfelt message once again:
Believe.
