Film Threat: Hoodoo Guru
NEW IN THEATERS THIS WEEK: Honestly, we had every intention of hating The Love Guru but when push came to shove… we just couldn’t. Yes, there are more penis/fart jokes in it than a class trip to the proctologists’, and yes, it certainly feels like there’s a lot of recycled Austin Powers shit in here, and yes, it is definitely kind of weird how Mike Myers’ character, Guru Pitka, gains and loses his accent from scene to scene. But on the other hand, we laughed out loud. A whole bunch of times. And there’s lots of pluses beyond that, as well: Romany Malco, the dude who plays Conrad on Weeds, is great as “The Tiger Woods of Hockey,” and Justin Timberlake’s bad, just awful Quebec accent is actually funny as shit, and Jessica Alba is perfectly wooden and stand-in-ish. And with Myers, they all form a gooey center that pretty much anyone can at least pass 90 minutes with. Oh, and that’s the other thing: It’s SHORT. Now pass the popcorn and shut my brain off already.
