Dept. Of Guerrilla Marketing That People Send Out Press Releases For: The UNDERGROUND Graveyard!
Before we step into the fray with this molten lava made of the pure, raw goo of PR stupidity, let us just say this: Laurel Hill Cemetery has its credentials in order — established in the 1840s, the cemetery/park preceded Central Park as a model for urban getaways and today holds a Best of Philly award for “Best Tourist Attraction You’ve Never Been To.” And while attendance may not be where they want it these days, LHC is not a soda. It is not a video game. It does not need guerrilla marketing. But that’s just what it’s getting: In Center City, Chestnut Hil, Manayunk, Old City, Reading Terminal, South Street and University City, little headstones like the one you see at right are popping up all over. Who would think to do such a thing? Why, none other than ad agency Red Tettemer, the same people who brought you that dumb groundhog “guerrilla” campaign — for three years running. But, fair is fair, and yes, we just took the bait. But only because Laurel Hill is gorgeous and weird and old. Not because, and this should be noted, we were “freaked out” by the “edgy” “guerrilla” marketing campaign that someone sent us a press release for. After all, do you think the Viet Cong sent out press releases?

I recently went for a bike ride through Laurel Hill - so beautiful! Lots of winding paths and amazing views. And there’s now a farmer’s market across the street.

That’s it. I’m getting on my bike and I’m riding to Fishtown and I am going to kick your tires. You’re dead, Sweeney.
