Hyperspace Clusterfuck: Could The Mendte Case Be Gross And Klein’s Comeuppance For Making You Read About Alycia Lane For Six Months?

What, us worry?
It’s never really been a secret that Dan Gross and Michael Klein have a rivalry going that mirrors that of the respective papers they work for, the Daily News and the Inquirer. Like most people, we’ve always regarded the DN/Inky rivalry as utter bullshit — both papers are the children of a highly dysfunctional family so laden with problems that it’s a miracle any of them exist at all. That they compete for stories about celebrities in a city that, as we have said often, patently has none is just an extra layer of absurdity on this mess. But here’s what we’re thinking: Increasingly, the reporting on the Larry Mendte case indicates suspicion that not only did Mendte illegally access Alycia Lane’s email account, but also that he may well have fed what he found there to the local media. During the whole Lane mess a few months back, it was obvious that nobody cared more about Lane’s comings and goings that Gross and Klein, and from our point of view, they both pretty much equally owned the story. So you can see where we’re going with this: Did Mendte feed either one items? And if so, are there consequences for either/both? We’ve asked both gossip columnists this question point blank, and we’ve yet to hear back from either. What we do know is this: The results of the current FBI investigation could well change the Gross/Klein rivalry forever. Best of all, SOMEBODY is gonna pay for making us have to act like we cared about this lame newsanchor/celebrityvoid bullshit. Awesome.
