South Philly Biennial To Put UArts Kids In Close Proximity To Cheesemongers And Roast Pork

One of the things we truly miss about living in South Philly is the freak artist/longtime local interface; in any other neighborhood in the city proper, these two groups are eternally at odds with one another, but in South Philly, and especially around the market, there is a vibe of dippy tolerance that is utterly heartwarming. The Woodstock of this vibe, if you will, would seem to be the South Philly Biennial, taking place tomorrow at 9th and Christian Streets from noon to 6pm. Here, in the parking lot next to DiBruno Brothers Sandwich Shop, a whole grip of artists and performers will do their thing. Among them: Sweatheart, a brass ensemble of students led by David Fishkin, Jimmy Cousins and his live band, the Magnet City Kids, girl group Tayaesha Busay, local legend Darren Finizio, and more. Fun! “I think its important to keep the public on their toes to the fact that transformation can happen anywhere,” says organizer Athena Barat. “This is an experiment in communication, and I hope everyone involved walks away from the event better able to do so.” Um, you said it, sister. We just hope, for his own sake, that Darren doesn’t show up in a Speedo.
