This Weekend: I’ll Always Love My Mama (And Dizzee Rascal)

FRIDAY:
>>> Dizzee Rascal, I never stopped loving you. Grime came and went so fast that it took me a second to actually remember that it was called “grime,” but I have not once forgotten Dizzee, from “Fix Up” straight on down to “Pussyhole.” No lie, dude, you are the James Brown of music I absolutely cannot fathom but speaks to me like a laser beam anyway. At the First Unitarian Church with El-P and Busdriver, whom I also have no quarrel with.
>>> I’m just gonna pull my Honestly Card and tell you flat out: I don’t know where Disgraceland is. But that’s just as well because it sounds like it’s an ILLEGAL UNDERGROUND VENUE and as we all know, THE MAN reads Philebrity. So to see Japan’s speedy girlish garage rock sensations Test Patterns with newish Philly band Love City and Mean Streets, I’ve agreed (through Craigslist) to be waiting on the corner of Frankford and Norris at 7pm tonight, blindfolded and ready to be picked up by someone named smileyfacekiller@gmail.com. I’m pumped.
>>> Others here in the PhilebriTent may disagree but frankly, trying to decide whether I like or dislike The Teenagers has been just exhausting. While I decide, see them at the North Star and get me something to drink while you’re out. I have the strangest yen for a YooHoo, it’s the weirdest thing.
>>> Truth serum allows me to say that back in the day, I hated hated hated Rocket From The Crypt while the entire rest of a certain segment of the population that I guess I belonged to adored these guys. My reasons were many: They basically invented chain wallet math rock with panache. They looked like awesome rockabilly dudes but would not, could not play actually rockabilly music. Eventually, they went away. But ain’t this a bitch: Some of the RFTCers are now in this band The Night Marchers, and they’re much, much better — kinda like a good old fashioned postpunk band. Time signatures that do not have the painful dog whistle effect on girls. Better still: They are playing in Souf Philly at The Oregon Club, 1728 S. 2nd Street. (For vibe, think “place where Mummers drink and debate whether next year’s theme should be about Star Wars or Mexicans and finally, after many beers, decide it should be ‘Mexican Star Wars.’”) Go. You’ll have fun.
>>> There really is quite a bit of great music happening tonight: Let Me Ride with guest DJ Carl Michaels at Fluid, and to wing it in the total other direction, British Sea Power is at JB’s. Your move.

bsSATURDAY:
>>> You’ve read the fanzine, you downloaded the mixtape, you watched the videos, and now you’ve dyed your hair and put on your trenchcoat and now, you’re finally ready. The 4th Annual Philebrity Belle & Sebastian Dance Party is upon you. Go, child. It’s finally time for you to be somewhere you belong. Admission is free, and the first Belle track drops at 9pm.
>>> Oddly, across town, The Cure are playing. But if you don’t have tickets for that now, you’re not going to get them. AND, the Smiths tribute band Girlfriend In A Coma is playing at The Khyber. Someone is trying to tell us something.
>>> Highly recommended on the basis of this slideshow alone: DJs Bushy and RnG’s “Resurrection” at The Raven, a dank little spot across from Sofitel we’re actually really beginning to love. Stay tuned on Monday for some really pretty awesome Philebrity/Resurrection-related news.
>>> Oh! And during the day, crafty types, The Philadelphia Independent Craft Market at the 941 Theater in NoLibs.

SUNDAY:
>>> Our of respect, only one pick today, and it’s Mother’s Day, and let us just say it: All you mothers are like mothers to us. And you look great. And Dad’s a dick, and you did awesome despite it all. We love you so much we want to move back home, is that a problem? Take this woman to brunch, and don’t show up all hung over. It’s tacky. This woman gave you LIFE.

This is a little slice comedic genius:

“I’ve agreed (through Craigslist) to be waiting on the corner of Frankford and Norris at 7pm tonight, blindfolded and ready to be picked up by someone named smileyfacekiller@gmail.com. I’m pumped.”

And yet, not the funniest thing in the post. “For vibe, think “place where Mummers drink and debate whether next year’s theme should be about Star Wars or Mexican and finally, after many beers, decide it should be ‘Mexican Star Wars.’”

In all honestly, that is the funniest sentence I have read all week.

What are the chances that I can see Dizzee Rascal. Leave. Make it to JB’s. To catch British Sea Power?

    I like my chances.

I’m trying the same thing but with Tickley Feather in West Philly and the Rosebuds at JB’s. Here’s to having options…

  6. peter.dyer Says:

Problem solved. BSP is sold out.

  7. Blackmail Says:

I used to vote at the Oregon Club. I’m pretty sure Disgraceland is in that neck of the woods too.

  8. billy Says:
