Dept. Of “Oooh, Scary” Threats: Earthlink Threatens To Shut Down WiFi That Doesn’t Work And Nobody Uses Anyway
Oh my God, these motherfucking assholes.
Earthlink, which stopped accepting new customers last week, has given the city until tomorrow to come up with a plan to take over the system or it could begin to take down the network, according to sources close to discussions. An original deadline of last Wednesday came and passed.
Now, a couple of things about this. One is that if Earthlink can’t even be bothered to finish the network, do we actually believe they’re going to go about the costly effort that would come dismantling everything they’ve already done? Not likely: Instead, we can completely see them leaving it much as it is now, unfinished, hangin’ in the breeze. (Which could be great for the City, but again, we really, really need some kind of dealmaking genius to figure out a way to make this thing both make money and work.) Another thing: Earthlink apparently owes Wireless Philadelphia, the well-intentioned but nonetheless right now kinda-screwed non-profit, $1 million, due on May 23. We are secretly hoping that Earthlink stiffs them and opens up a window for litigation between the City of Philadelphia and Earthlink. Because Earthlink would most likely not fare well; when you get down to it, Earthlink’s business model problem is not, or should not, also be the City’s. This is about to get ugly.

Oh I really hope they sue!! Those guys are total bastards. First their service didn’t work and then in exchange for my hardships they offered me 6 months for free. It’s not free service if said service is non-existant! Then they had me rent their router; surprise that failed too. I promptly returned it and the bastards billed me for its value two months later(!!) Then I spoke with at least two people who said that erased it off my acount, but another month goes by and I get a call from a collections agency. I had never spoken to a collections agency before, OMG that guy had no soul whatsoever and deserves very bad things to happen to him. OH the hate in my heart… sue sue sue!
