$100K “Green” House Spawns Blog, New Construction Company And Major Architectural Broners
We’ve been following local developer PostGreen’s movements in building $100K LEED-certified eco-friendly housing in Kensington since the moment we heard of it. And yea, we must admit that we definitely get broners when we see the cute little PostGreen hybrid pick-up truck puttering around the hood. Today, there’s more good news: PostGreen has teamed up with local construction company Level 5 Construction to form Build It Green, a company specifically made to build eco-savvy housing with great design here in Philly. That’s a model of the $100K house at right; more can be found on the $100K House blog.

Yeah, great for the environment, but not exactly as affordable as their brand name implies. The houses will be auctioned, and the builders are expecting them to go for between 200K and 250K.

sooz - Thanks for the clarification. This is a common misunderstanding. The $100K figure refers to the construction costs only for the project. It was chosen because it is somewhat of “the magic number” for affordable construction goals in building circles, especially when referring to a modern home. We decided to add the green aspect in there and try to hit the same number to prove green can be done for little to no extra cost…
I won’t claim that $200-$250K is “affordable” for a huge number of people out there but it is less than half the price of other similar modern and green homes in the area being built. Ours will be the first LEED Platinum townhome in Philly and all of PA. You can pick up LEED Gold townhomes down the street from us for $550K - $750K if you’d like instead…
