Amy Poehler And The Quiet Brooklyn Hipsters

Q: Baby Mama is set in Philadelphia, and it deals a lot with issues of gentrification and the changing face of the city. How important was the setting to the story?A: Philly just felt like the right town, a place where you could get a sense of both Kate’s and Angie’s worlds. But we faked Brooklyn as Philly pretty much the whole time. It was a really good match. It was fun to have a fake pregnancy belly in Brooklyn—even the hipsters had to turn when I took it off in the middle of the street and ripped off the Velcro. But they’d react in a really quiet hipster way.
Maybe this is why they had to film this in Brooklyn instead of right here in Phillly. Our hipsters aren’t quiet, and the South Philly natives would be confused about why she would bother with maternity clothes when oversized pajama pants are the one key item you ever really need.

You know South Philly and Fishtown aren’t the only places where people wear this. I’m sure in many of Brooklyn’s blue collar neighborhoods people sport this look. When I go back home this week I’m sure, like usual, I’ll see more folks in “evening gear” then here.
