Film Threat: Is That Neil Patrick Harris?

RECOMMENDED: We all remember Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, a film about two college-age, multicultural men who embark on a late-night journey of self-discovery… to find hamburgers and smoke weed. In the second installment of the classic stoner film, we find Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) just a few days after the White Castle adventure with plane tickets to Amsterdam and for some godawful reason, a bong on a plane. As the title, Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay reveals, things do not exactly go as planned and the two are accused of being terrorists and sent to prison. It is after their escape that these friends go to a “no bottoms party,” drop in on George W. Bush and, of course, meet up with friend and pervy guy Neil Patrick Harris. Although this film has more political undertones and commentary about the current state of our country than the first, it doesn’t lose the immature potty humor. And to us, that is a great thing.

ALSO IN THEATERS: Baby Mama, with hometown girl Tina Fey and Philebrity girl-crush Amy Poehler, is about a 37-year old single woman (Fey) who is desperate for a baby but can’t carry one. She turns to a surrogate to carry the baby for her, and is shocked at the crassness of South Philly native Angie (Poehler). YAY SOUTH PHILLY! Reminicent of the chemistry they shared on the SNL set, the relationship between the two is sharp and mean. This is the like the female version of Apatow, without the men-children at every turn. If you are feeling more serious this weekend (which obviously we are not) check out The Life Before Her Eyes with Evan Rachel Wood (Marilyn Manson’s child-bride) and Uma Thurman playing the same character 15 years apart. Or, The Year My Parents Went On Vacation, a beautiful film about two parents who are forced to give up their son and go into hiding in 1970’s Brazil. Soccer, politics and family together with a gorgeous glimpse into the past.
