This Weekend: Humans On The Barbie

bbqFRIDAY:
>>> Pity the DJ or band out there hawking their wares on this First Friday: Between all that art and the Philadelphia Film Festival — we’ll have picks for both of those up in a flash — the social directives for once seem away from the clubs and into the galleries, theaters and so on. Thus, even the best parties tonight are that way in part due to their proximity to all the other stuff. We’re talking about Excess at Medusa and Faux Pas at National Mechanics right now. Faux Pas, of course, is the bastard offspring of Hands&Knees and potentially the most vibrant survivor of the parties-primarily-for-the-purpose-of-taking-party-pictures phase. But we’ll take it if it means we get to hang on the steps at Nat’l Mechs on a spring(ish) night. Excess, however, is a new contender, buoyed by DJ Andy Pry‘s minimal, clicky disco-ish sound. Plus, it’s at Medusa, perfectly in the trajectory of I-House and Prince Theater.
>>> And pardon us as we get the vapors for moment, because there is actually a GOOD SHOW at the Mill Creek Tavern. I know, right? The Bee Team/Drink Up Buttercup/The Lisps/An American Chinese are all doin’ what they do, and you’re not taking one for the team if you show up at this. You are there for the betterment of yourself.
SATURDAY:
>>> Guess what the single most played song in my iTunes is: It’s “Also Ran” by French Kicks. I shit you not. But how could this be? I think this may be the only song I’ve ever even heard by French Kicks. I’m not even fan! I don’t even care! And yet, THIS IS MY #1 ITUNES JAM. So I suppose the least we all could do is check them out with Elf Power and The Chimeras at Johnny Brenda’s, and raise a glass to all that is random and intuitive. Thanks, Apple. I think I just learned something.
>>> We mentioned this earlier in the week: Pi Lam’s Human BBQ XXX with A Place to Bury Strangers, Oxford Collapse, Japanther, Pants Yell!, Tarngo, Brown Recluse Sings, Birds of Maya, Farcial Hoodwink, Perennials, Manic Mirrors, and DJ sets by Tax Lo’s Dave Nada and Cullen Stalin. Starts at noon and ends when you’re dead. Happy 30th, Pi Lam! Again!
>>> And lastly, for you wordy wordsmiths out there, Kimya Dawson — you know, the Moldy Peaches Juno chick who my 16-year-old sister ADORES — is at the First Unitarian Church Sanctuary, and Ray Davies — ask your friend who is old and still uses compacts discs — is at the Tower. Man’s a legend. Why didn’t I get tickets to this? Damn.
>>> And lastly, Philly hip-hop legends Tuff Crew reunite (and it feels so good) at M Room.
SUNDAY:
>>> Random awesomeness: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony at the TLA. Whaaaa? No, seriously: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony at the TLA. I’m going to say it until you believe me, and also believe that this could be crazy fun: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony at the TLA. YOU HEAR ME? Bone Thugs-N-Harmony at the TLA.
>>> And as mentioned earlier this week, Greyhounds kick off their Sunday night residency at the Khyber with The Major Leagues and Neighborhood Choir.
>>> And finally, the Philadelphyinz ALL RAP Bar Mitzvah at Silk City, thereby cementing it: Sunday night is the most happenin’ night, music-wise, of this whole weekend. Feels good, doesn’t it. Like Philadelphia before we got all bougie and thought that it was “irresponsible” to get hammered on Sundays. Do you honestly think the Lord would want it any other way?
