This Weekend: An Utterly Stellar Opportunity To Make Your Own Fun
FRIDAY:
>>> At the risk of sounding like a party pooper, everything there is to do this weekend is something you’ve already done like 500 times, first with wonderment and an open heart, but eventually, inevitably, utterly joylessly. We love weekends like this because they are A) the defining argument against most monthly DJ nights, which tend to dish out the same shit each time and B) AN UTTERLY STELLAR OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE YOUR OWN FUN! We talk about this concept a lot when the Weekend Picks crawl turns up shitty, but believe us, it’s not an empty promise. So this weekend, we’ll give you a recipe:
If you can’t make some fun out this, you should absolutely not be reading this blog.
>>> Meanwhile, for those of you AFRAID OF MAKING YR OWN FUN, here are some places where they will make the fun FOR you, in exchange for a small fee: The Turnaround Vs. Immediate at the Barbary (seriously a stellar party, but we wish more 98.1 WOGL listeners would go), and Turbostation at the Trocadero with special guest Cobra Kai and your Turbostation 2008 DJs Steven Bloodbath, Shawn Ryan, Strawberry Mansion, Oh Murder Inc, and Jacci Stallone. Also an always-hearty par-ty.
>>> And if you don’t like fun, we should tell you that R5 just released a last-minute bloc of Eels tickets.
SATURDAY:
>>> Holy Places We Never Go But This Seems Fun! At The Raven, there’s the International Lover night with DJ Diamond Girl spinning French New-Wave, Italian Disco, German Punk, Dutch Rap and Spanish Pop (flyer pictured). We love nights like this because hearing popular music sung in other languages completely obscures how stupid most of this stuff is. We’re in.
>>> When will Stephen Malkmus just give up the ghost and stop making one utterly shite album after another and just GET PAVEMENT BACK TOGETHER ALREADY??? Go to the TLA and ask him. We bet he’ll have a very thoughtful, not-at-all pissy response.
>>> And last but definitely not least, Caribou is back at Johnny Brenda’s with their totally bold and beautiful modern psychedelic music. Very, very, very recommended.
SUNDAY:
>>> Get up at the crack of dawn, turn over the entire house for loose bills and get the to the Vox Populi Record Fair. Pay an extra $10 to get in early and scoop up all the good stuff. At the Rotunda, proceeds benefit Vox.
>>> Hey did you find an extra $350 laying around? No, how about $60. ‘Cause that’s the range for Mary J Blige/Jay-Z tix. Soooo much better than John Adams.
>>> But, real talk, John Adams is not that bad, either.
