New Theater Opens Up In NoLibs, Safely Shielded From New NoLibs Population By Highway
For a while, it was party-for-rent spot; before that it was nothing; and before that, who knows. But as of last week 941 N. Front Street had triumphantly morphed into the 941 Theater. Headed up in part by the Backseat Film Festival’s Doug Sakmann, the 941 played host to last week’s festival, but now that the fest has come and gone, get used to seeing more film and performance in the space. “The bulk of our programming will be first run independent feature films,” says the 941’s website. “In addition we will have the ability to host community based events, screenings from local university students and filmmakers and other events that would bring culture to Northern Liberties. [...] Our first non-film event will be the Big Art Show on Saturday, April 26th, an all day art celebration featuring over 40 artists from all over Philadelphia.” Before you say it, we will: But is this place gonna get shut down by L&I like it was when there were DJ nights and punk rock shows in the space? Not likely. Thus far, the 941 has received a thumbs-up from the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, 1st District Councilman Frank DiCicco, State Representative Mike O’Brien, and the Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association, among others.
